The iPhone took the phone industry by storm upon its release in 2007. Featuring a classy look, amazing functionality, and a ton of features, it was a smash hit from day one. Apple was so far ahead of the competition that even today no phone can claim to beat it in terms of features. Yet, for the consumer, there are several options that can match, if not better what Apple has to offer.
One of the biggest launches in recent memory was Motorola's Droid. After several duds in the past few years, Motorola had to come up with something brilliant to save its mobile phone division, and it came up with the Droid - a touchscreen phone built on the Google Android platform. The Droid has the advantage of being sold on the superior Verizon network, and is also sold independently without any phone plan. The Android software it runs on is open source and thus, much more flexible than the iPhone's OS. It also has a physical keypad that is much easier to type on than a touchscreen one.
Another major phone by a big company competing directly against the iPhone is Google's Nexus One. While it may not have all the features of the iPhone, the Nexus One is a very strong offering, running on the Android platform. It has GPS, a great touchscreen, an increasing number of apps, and a sleek, stylish design that will appeal to anyone. Also has a physical keyboard.
Among other phones that compete with the iPhone are the Samsung Instinct, LG VU, LG Voyager, Nokia E90 Communicator and the Nokia N99. While Samsung and LG's offerings are decidely inferior than the iPhone, Nokia's phones offer a very strong competition. The N99 is an exceptional phone with great software, response keys, good speed, and a high quality touchscreen.
If you plan to buy a phone in the near future, you may want to wait a few more months. Nokia, Blackberry, and HTC are all coming out with some great handsets in a few months that may offer something more than the iPhone.
